Setting Up Your New Echo Device

Amazon’s suite of Echo devices (Click this link for a full break down) has been selling like hotcakes in recent months as more and more people look to add some automation to their homes. If you are here, then there is a good chance that you have just got an Echo device and are now trying to figure it out how to set it up. Fear not we are here to help.

First thing, before you start please head over to the iOS or Android store and download the Alexa App, you will need this App to complete the setup process. If you don’t have an Amazon account already, you can set one up in the App during the setup process. Once you are ready to begin, please try follow the simple steps below.

  • Step One: Inside the box, you should find your Echo device and a power plug. Go ahead and plug it into the wall socket and give it a few moments to get started.
  • Step Two: Wait until you see the blue light turn orange and begin to circle. In this “spinning orange state” the Echo will be visible as a local Wi-fi device that you can connect to via your phone once prompted by the App.
  • Step Three: Open the Alexa App on your phone and follow the on-screen instructions to log in and connect to your Echo. (You will need to open your Wi-Fi settings on your phone and swap from your home router to the Echo).
  • Step Four: Once connected to the Echo, the App will ask you to enter the password for your home Wi-Fi connection. The Echo will then update its own Wi-Fi settings to match yours and connect to the internet.

That’s it, Alexa is now online and you are all set to start enjoying your new Echo device.

Giving voice instructions can take a little getting used to. Start by trying something simple. You do need to say “Alexa” before any instruction. Try some of the below commands.

  • Alexa, what time is it?
  • Alexa, what is the weather like?
  • Alexa, tell me a joke
